Welcome to Mohican Country! Conveniently located in North Central Ohio half way between Cleveland and Columbus, this five county patch of paradise is pleased to offer you an expansive array of activities to enjoy. Relax on the smooth cool waters of the Mohican River. Get your heart rate up on an exhilarating hike through our lush forests. Stroll through an Ashland city park, or take in an outdoor show on a lovely summer evening. Travel back in time as you discover the thick veins of history that run through our villages and countryside. We offer you quaint shops and cozy lodgings, history and hauntings, natural wonders and man-made marvels. Time flows like a river here. Step in wherever you’d like.
A visit to Ashland County is a great place to start. The city of Ashland has blossomed into a well-respected center for the Arts, offering art galleries and gardens as well as year-round plays, speakers and concerts at the Ashland University Hugo Young Theater. Southern Ashland County boasts the village of Loudonville, the heart of Mohican Country. This is the very best of outdoor family fun. Choose to canoe, raft or kayak, or try your skill at putt-putt golf and a go-kart track. Just outside of town, Mohican State Park presents breathtaking beauty at every time of year, from exuberant springtime to the lush green of summer to a spectacular display of autumn color to the stark serenity of winter.
Due east, you will find yourself in charming Wayne County. Rolling hills, shady forests and scenic farmland await you in this crossroads of culture and country. Nature lovers will be delighted with the abundant walking trails in the nearby Nature Preserve, Wildlife Area, and Secrest Arboretum. The third county of the Northwest Territory, Wayne County was founded in 1796 and is named after “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a close colleague of George Washington. There are more than ten historical societies on hand where you can examine a replica 19th century firehouse, encounter the living history of the Kidron-area Mennonite Anabaptists, or explore a number of century-old houses, cabins, barns and stores. Wayne County remains a rich cultural center with year-round festivals and events from orchestra concerts in January to the Strawberry Festival in June.
Holmes County is also known as Amish Country, and is home of the world’s largest Amish community. Explore the rich and unique culture of the Amish as you visit an Amish farm. Tune your ear to the clip-clop of a passing buggy. Drink deeply of the peace and quiet. Before you leave, you’ll want to purchase a fine Amish quilt or piece of furniture -- a timeless reminder of your visit. Treat your nose to the tantalizing aromas of the Chocolate Company. For something truly out of the ordinary, consider a trip to see exotic livestock as antelope, zebras, and giraffes.
Travel South and you will find Knox County, a place where Old Times are not forgotten. Drive through charming small towns such as Mt. Vernon, Centerburg, Danville, Fredericktown and Martinsburg and discover two of the finest rural museums in Ohio. The Knox County Agricultural Museum captures 19th and 20th century farm life with its 3,000+ piece exhibit including household and farm tools and a one-room schoolhouse while the Knox County Historical Museum houses treasures of all kinds that are both culturally and historically significant to the area. After stepping back in time, step out of time altogether for a while as you hike or bike our Kokosing Gap or Mohican Valley Trail. You will be revived by the calm quiet and invigorated by the breathtaking scenery. You may also choose to enjoy any of our many fairs and festivals scheduled throughout the summer and fall.
After a dip into the quiet serenity of Knox County, drive north to bustling Richland County, proudly proclaimed to be “America at its best!” Downtown Ontario offers a wide variety of big-name shopping opportunities and restaurants. In nearby Lexington you will find the nationally known Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, a motorsports facility that hosts such big-name events as the IndyCar Series and the AMA Superbike Championship Series. Steel your nerves and visit any number of the fascinating and spooky sites that make up “haunted Mansfield”. Oak Hill Cottage is considered to be the most perfect Gothic house in the U.S. and has long been haunted by a ghostly woman frequently seen dusting and tidying. Don’t miss the Ohio State Reformatory. Built in 1886, the old Reformatory has been the site of four major motion pictures including “The Shawshank Redemption”. Nowadays, it is open for visits, and for the bravest among us, ghost hunts and ghost walks.
Go green in Mansfield with a visit to any of our orchards and campgrounds. Stroll through the beautiful estate gardens and stately French Provincial style Kingwood Hall of Kingwood Center. Relax and enjoy nature at Charles Mill Lake Park and Marina. Glimpse a flash of color and delight in a lilting song at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.
